About Me

Hi — I am Alex Diaz. I am currently working at the European Commission as a Machine Learning Engineer, where I implement AI systems to improve the cybersecurity of European institutions. I hold a background in aerospace engineering and a Master's degree in Artificial Intelligence from the University of Sydney.

I focus on building and deploying production-grade AI systems across Natural Language Processing (NLP), Large Language Models (LLMs), Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), and knowledge representation. Throughout my career, I have led complex machine learning initiatives end-to-end, from ideation and experimentation to deployment and monitoring, working across diverse domains including cybersecurity, fintech, and data intelligence.

Currently, I am leading the creation of a new AI team within the cybersecurity department at the European Commission, where I set the technical vision and drive the integration of advanced AI capabilities into operational systems. My work centers on semantic reasoning systems, knowledge graph construction, LLM fine-tuning using LoRA and qLoRA, information retrieval with vector search and re-ranking models, and contextual understanding pipelines. All solutions are built with privacy-consciousness at their core, leveraging open-source technologies and internally deployed models.

My research interests lie in Knowledge Graphs, Graph Neural Networks, and Metacognitive AI—particularly in developing AI systems capable of self-reflection, uncertainty quantification, and reasoning about their own knowledge. I am committed to bridging practical AI implementation with fundamental research in AI self-awareness, adaptive learning strategies, and semantic reasoning systems.

Apart from work, I enjoy scuba diving, exploring the underwater world and discovering marine life. I also love playing drums, which allows me to express my creative side through music. I'm always eager to try new things and pick up new skills — recently, I've been exploring pottery and other creative pursuits.
